SonicWall gateway attacks put internal services within reach
This is a DailyCyber.News update, brought to you by BareMetalCyber.com, for Tuesday, October 13th, 2026.
Internal services behind SonicWall SMA 1000 gateways may be exposed through a maximum-severity weakness in the WorkPlace portal. Two security firms reported exploit traffic against honeypots and decoys only days after the vendor advisory. SonicWall had earlier said it had no evidence of exploitation, and these outside reports don’t establish that production systems were successfully compromised. A hotfix is available. The SMA 100 Series and S S L-VPNs running on SonicWall firewalls aren’t affected by this issue.
The risk comes from where these gateways sit. They connect the public internet to corporate applications, identity services and internal networks. Abuse could make an affected appliance send requests into services that were never intended to face the internet. Leaders should treat exposed remote-access infrastructure as a high-priority business risk, while defenders should identify every SMA 1000 appliance, apply the hotfix and review it for unusual activity.
Security boundary devices can become an attacker’s shortest path inward. Patch affected appliances immediately and investigate unusual WorkPlace requests or internal connections originating from the gateway.
