SafePay ransomware reaches 600 organizations through familiar gaps
This is a DailyCyber.News update, brought to you by BareMetalCyber.com, for Friday, October 23rd, 2026.
At least 600 organizations across multiple critical infrastructure sectors have been affected by SafePay ransomware since August 2024. The group commonly gets in through exposed credentials, brute-force attempts, V P N access, and known weaknesses in internet-facing edge devices. Once inside, it steals data, encrypts systems, and pressures victims with leak threats and direct phone calls.
SafePay often relies on legitimate administration, remote-access, and file-transfer tools. That can make malicious movement harder to separate from normal activity. The group also deletes shadow copies and resets some network-attached backup devices, which can remove recovery options at the moment they’re needed most.
For leaders, the key question is whether recovery systems remain protected after production access is lost. For defenders, priorities include edge-device patching, multifactor authentication, tighter account controls, restricted administrative tools, and offline immutable backups. The broader lesson is that ransomware continues to succeed through familiar and preventable identity and access gaps.
Secure internet-facing access, enforce multifactor authentication, restrict administrative tools, and verify that backups can’t be altered from production.
