Fresh and frozen food was destroyed after attackers remotely triggered defrosting at French supermarkets. Reports place the affected footprint at 250 to 350 stores across several major chains. The controllers were reportedly running older Danfoss software, but investigators still haven’t established how they were compromised. A French investigation is now examining the attack and the resulting losses.

The practical consequence is clear. Remote access was turned into food waste, lost sales and potential safety concerns. Internet scans also found thousands of reachable Danfoss systems, including many in France, which shows how broad the exposed control surface may be. Refrigeration technology therefore belongs in operational risk and business continuity planning, not only facilities management. Defenders should inventory exposed controllers, update supported firmware and alert on unexpected temperature or defrost changes.

The larger lesson is that ordinary connected equipment can translate a cyber intrusion into immediate physical damage. Organizations should remove refrigeration controllers from direct internet exposure and verify firmware, access controls and temperature alerts across every store.
