Remote access disrupted after September Windows server updates

Organizations that rely on Windows Remote Desktop Services may face blocked work after installing the September 2026 cumulative updates. Administrators have reported failures across Windows Server 2019, 2022, and 2025. In some cases, servers work normally for several hours before new connections begin to hang or fail. Existing sessions may also stop disconnecting properly, and services can become unresponsive after users log out. Some affected systems have required a hard reset, while administrators say rolling back the update restored Remote Desktop functionality. That creates a difficult security and availability trade-off because removing the update also removes its security fixes. Leaders should understand where shared desktops and terminal servers support critical workflows before approving broad deployment. Defenders should identify affected systems, preserve technical details from any failure, and confirm that recovery options work before changing production servers. Microsoft says it’s aware of the reports and is investigating. For now, stage these updates in representative environments and keep a tested rollback plan ready for critical Remote Desktop systems.
