A cyberattack at UNM Health turned into an immediate patient-care problem on October 26th. Critical electronic systems went offline, ambulances were diverted for two hours, appointments and outpatient surgeries were canceled, and acceptance of new patients was temporarily limited. Hospitals remained open, and critical systems and normal ambulance traffic were restored by early October 27th. UNM Health said containment limited the confirmed impact to some end-user devices and prevented the intruder from reaching core systems and servers.

The disruption affected New Mexico’s only level 1 trauma center, so the consequences extended beyond the technology team. The scope of any data exposure is still unknown, and claims made by a ransomware group haven’t been verified. Leaders need downtime plans that account for patient diversion, canceled care, and coordination with neighboring providers. Defenders should note how fast isolation and external incident-response support can help protect core systems.

The practical priority is to rehearse clinical downtime and regional patient-diversion decisions before the next system outage.
