Sensitive records involving children and people seeking protection were copied during an attack on Arizona’s court system. The incident began when a court employee clicked a malicious link in a phishing email. Attackers then gained access to highly compressed backup files. The stolen material included more than one hundred fifty thousand Foster Care Review Board reports covering current and past cases dating to 2010, along with records related to protective orders. The court said it had no evidence so far that the information had been shared.

The potential harm goes beyond ordinary identity theft. These files contain sensitive family, safety, and legal context, and combining names with case details could create added danger for people affected by abuse, harassment, or threats. Leaders should make sure the response considers personal safety and trauma, not just regulatory notification. Defenders should protect backup systems through segmented access, strong authentication, monitoring, and phishing-resistant controls. Recovery copies often hold concentrated collections of an organization’s most sensitive history, making them valuable targets rather than passive archives. Review backup access immediately and build notification and safety support around the specific harm these records could enable.
