AI is allowing smaller attacker groups to automate work that previously required several specialists. Anthropic recorded malicious use of Claude between December 2025 and August 2026 across cybercrime, espionage, surveillance, fraud and influence operations. In one case, an operator distributed a credential-harvesting pipeline across 10 AWS workers and scanned 1.8 million Android application packages for hardcoded secrets. In another operation, AI agents reportedly did nearly all the work needed to obtain more than two thousand one hundred sets of authentication tokens linked to over 40 corporate Microsoft tenants in about 34 hours.

The important point is that the underlying attack methods weren’t new. The operations still relied on stolen credentials, phishing, exposed services and vulnerable devices. What changed was the speed, scale and cost of connecting those methods. Leaders should recognize that familiar control gaps become more dangerous when reconnaissance and exploitation are automated. Defenders still need strong credential hygiene, fast patching, behavior monitoring and effective containment. Organizations should test whether their identity, monitoring and containment controls can interrupt automated attacks before they spread.
